How to Get Opulent Keys in Destiny 2

The Leviathan Returns Quest

Opulent Keys are first introduced in Destiny 2 as you play through the Season of the Haunted story quests. After finishing the first steps of the introductory “The Leviathan Returns” quest and taking part in the Containment activity on the Leviathan, you will be asked to visit the Crown of Sorrow at the H.E.L.M. Doing so will net you a single Opulent Key.

Derelict Leviathan Chests

Opening the Cabal chests that can be found all over the Levithan is another easy way to grab some keys. They won’t drop often, but you should come across enough to yield a few Opulent Keys if you spend some time on the Leviathan grinding weapons and armor.

The Containment Ritual

If you make your way to the Castellum on the Leviathan, you will be loaded into an instance with other players and given the chance to take on the Containment Ritual. Getting to Tier 3 and finishing off the boss that spawns in will provide you with access to a chest. Lucky players will find this chest can drop an Opulent Key.

How to use Opulent Keys

All Opulent Keys are tied to specific chests, and finding out which one you actually have is quite simple. All you need to do is open your Inventory and examine the key. In the description, you will see a clue section, which will tell you where you need to go. The clues will usually point to an area of the Leviathan and then a smaller location clue within that area. For example, “Royal Pools, among stately columns.” This tells you where to go and what to look for to find the chest the key will open. After you make your way to the named location and find the right chest to open, you will receive one of the following rewards.

If you find a chest that is not the match for your key, an onscreen message will tell you. It is not possible to use your key with the wrong chest and lose it. You should also keep in mind that you can only hold a single key at a time, so it is wise to use it directly after finding it to ensure you do not miss any drops.
