Thor: Love and Thunder is bringing the love and thunder of Thor to theaters. The fourth Thor movie and the twenty-ninth MCU movie has tons of laughs and heart. However, as these Thor movies are part of the larger MCU, one cannot just watch the standalone titles and expect to know the complete picture of what is happening. Certain elements may be introduced into standalone titles that are fixed or resolved in other installments, with Thor’s eye being one of those very things.
How Did Thor Get His Eye Back in Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor actually got his eye back before the events of Love and Thunder. In Infinity War, Thor meets up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Rocket hands him a new eye that he stole to put into his head. If your memory’s a little vague on those events, here’s exactly what happened. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor faces his sister Hela as they battle over the throne of Asgard. In the ensuing battle between the siblings, Hela manages to pin Thor down and cut out his eye. For the rest of the film’s final battle, Thor is missing his eye, having a bloody hole there instead. The Asgardians are able to escape on the Statesman, where they witness Ragnarok. Thor, finally able to deal with the hole where his eye should be, dons an eye patch. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor and the rest of the Asgardians are attacked by Thanos and his Black Order, resulting in the deaths of numerous Asgardians, including Loki and Heimdall. Thor ends up being rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy, who take him into their ship, where he informs them that Thanos is the one who massacred the Asgardians. The Guardians agree to help Thor by sending him along with Rocket and Groot to Nidavellir in order to retrieve a weapon from the Dwarves. While traveling to Nidavellir, Thor and Rocket discuss Loki’s death, to which Rocket shows sympathy and hands Thor a new eye, one that he stole, to put in his head. In case you don’t remember, an ongoing joke within the Guardians movies is that Rocket loves to take body parts from people he encounters, so him having an eye on hand is perfectly within character. Thor loses the eye patch for the rest of the movie, instead being able to see using the eye that Rocket had stolen. When it comes to Thor: Love and Thunder, though, as I mentioned off the top, given that the MCU is a major franchise that expands many different installments, this means that plot elements introduced in standalone movies might be solved in movies that aren’t centered around the character. This is the case with Thor’s eye, as he lost it in the third Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok, but has it back in the fourth Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, with no explanation in the recent installment. Instead, the problem of Thor’s eye is solved in the crossover movie, Avengers: Infinity War. That’s all you need to know about how Thor got his eye back in Thor: Love and Thunder.
